Understanding Google and why it sets the tone for your SEO campaign

A quick word about Google, as it's our best friend, and a most discouraging enemy. Google search engine rankings are the standard by which we measure the performance of SEO campaigns. We do this for a couple of reasons:

Good for Google SEO, good-to-go...

  • As a general rule, what will be good for Google SEO will be good for Yahoo SEO. There are exceptions to this rule (such as using image description tags) where optimizing for google can hurt your rankings on MSN. However, over the long-term, MSN rankings always come back as Microsoft continues to improve their algorithms and often with more favorable results than before. So, more than any other search engine we want to appeal to Google's needs or algorithms.

  • Google indexes websites (and subsequent updates) months ahead of the other search engines. The user will see changes to any website immediately. An SEO professional can test versions of the snippet and more efficiently track both on-page and off-page SEO efforts as the site is being indexed and make changes accordingly.

  • Google brings approximately 75% of all website traffic to most websites, although the exact percentage depends heavily on the age of the site. In the first three months it could bring as much as 99% of total traffic. As a website ages, traffic distribution will change slightly. An example: we currently manage a 10 year old e-commerce website that does $2,000,000 a year. The site is highly regarded within the industry and receives a lot of referral traffic. To this day, the website still receives 70% of it's traffic from Google, 18% from Yahoo & just 2% from MSN.

Clearly, Google is very important to a successful SEO campaign. You can live and die by it, and it's important for any webmaster or business owner who depends heavily on the internet & organic search results to focus on Google, it's trends, major updates & new algorithms. This information can easily be found on the Google webmaster blog at www.googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com. Continue reading Search Engine Friendly Web Development.
